School Involvement

More than half of the 210 local Special Olympics Wisconsin Agencies describe themselves as a "school" program. This description can define a range of school involvement from using school facilities for practices to school personnel serving as Special Olympics coaches to a Special Olympics athletic program that mirror other school interscholastic programing.

Bring an Athlete to your School!

Cindy Bentley

Special Olympics Wisconsin has a number of athletes that have gone through Global Messengers training and are eager to share their stories. One of those athletes is Cindy Bentley, who is truly the embodiment of a Special Olympics athlete and an inspiration to anyone who knows her story. In 2010, authors Bob Kann and Caroline Hoffman shared Cindy’s story in their biography Cindy Bentley: Spirit of a Champion published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press.

Through a grant the past two years from the Wisconsin Board for People with Developmental Disabilities, Bob and Cindy have been able to travel the state of Wisconsin bringing Cindy’s valuable life lessons and contagious spirit to classrooms and schools full of children. If you are interested in bringing Cindy to your school and hearing her message or another athlete, please contact Krysten Kirsch, Director of Youth Initiatives at 262-241-7786, ext. 13 or kkirsch@specialolympiceswisconsin.org.
