Special Olympics Wisconsin holds award celebration

Approximately 60 Special Olympics Wisconsin (SOWI) supporters received awards for their dedication to the organization on Sunday, August 1, 2010.

Linda Dahl of Pewaukee received the Roger Kasper Special Service Award, the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a SOWI volunteer, for her outstanding service and commitment to our athletes and to SOWI in general.

Dave Braby of Cedarburg received the Jerry Eilola Memorial Management Team Member of the Year Award for his long-standing commitment and volunteer efforts that have improved the quality of area or state Special Olympics programs.

Quad/Graphics of Sussex received the most prestigious statewide award that Special Olympics bestows, the Chairman’s Award, which honors an individual or organization that has gone above and beyond the call of duty in supporting the Special Olympics movement in Wisconsin.

Awards of Excellence: Four individuals received this award which is given annually to a volunteer whose efforts significantly improve the Special Olympics experience for athletes. Recipients include: Brian Hemminghaus (Buffalo Wild Wings), Jerry Smith (Eau Claire), Kellye Knueppel, and Paul Wagner (Sheboygan).

Coach of the Year Award: Six individuals received this award which is given to a coach who best displays the leadership and organizational skills needed to guide a well-run local Special Olympics team. Recipiants include Ann Niemeier (Waupun), Beverely Schmidt (Merrill), Dave Krochalk (West Bend), Otto Frank (Burlington), Rachael Bergen (Madison), and the Voelker Siblings (Thorp).

Agency Manager of the Year Award: Seven individuals received this award which is given each year to Agency Managers who best display the leadership and organizational skills needed to manage a well-run local Special Olympics Program. Recipients included Bob Schilling (Ixonia), Delores Hundt (Juneau), Judy Santero (Oconomowoc), Karen Griffin (Green Bay), Kathy Spence (Spring Valley), Kelly McDonald (Mosinee), and Mary Dodd (Columbus).

Family of the Year Award: Six individuals received this award which is given each year to families that display leadership and organizational skills and makes a large contribution to Special Olympics. Recipiants include: The Casper Family (Oregon), the Beilke Family (Tomahawk), the Jaeger Family (Elkhorn), the Johnson Family (Luck), the Pronley Family (Brookfield), and the Strebel Family (Green Bay).

Female Athlete of the Year Award: Seven individuals received this award which is given each year to a Special Olympics female athletes who best display leadership skills and good sportsmanship. Recipiants include Cynthia Powers (Platteville), Felicia Ann Doan (Rothschild), Mary Schindhelm (Appleton), Michelle Vance (Beloit), Rachel Ann McNally (Eau Claire), Tammy Marotz (Shawano), and Beth Havlin (Oconomowoc).

Male Athlete of the Year Award: Seven individuals received this award that is given each year to Special Olympics male athletes who best display leadership skills and good sportsmanship. Recipients include Alvin Horton (Milwaukee),Brad Swamson (Green Bay), Brandon Drinkman (Eau Claire), Derek Koepke (Fond du Lac) Harry Reed (Reedsburg), Lee McGraw (Wauwautosa), and Sean Mudgett (Stevens Point).

Media Support of the Year Award: Four media outlets received this award that is given each year to media outlets that have paid extra attention and given considerable coverage to Special Olympics athletics. Recipients include: WSAW News Channel 7 (Wausau), Preps on the Net (West Bend), Q106 (Madison), and Sawyer County Record (Hayward) .

Organization of the Year Award: Six organizations received this award that is given each year to organizations that demonstrate great support for Special Olympics. Recipients include Colby Sports Booster Club, Kado & Associates (Eau Claire), New Berlin Police Department, Paddock Lake Area Lions Club, Verona High School, and Xavier High School.

Volunteer of the Year Award: Seven individuals received this award which is given each year to volunteers who best display leadership skills and devotes a lot of time and heart to Special Olympics. Recipients include Bill Menge (Phillips), Diana Mendrycki (Janesville), Gaylord Willis (Hillpoint), Jorgiann Gierok (Independence), Sarah Nunn (Green Bay), Robert Miller (Markesan), and Sue Roslowski (Oak Creek).
