Fox Valley Area Offers NEW Young Athletes Program!
This past winter a new Special Olympics program was brought to the Fox Valley Area! It is the Young Athletes program. Young Athletes is a sports-play program for children ages 2 – 7 with and without cognitive
disabilities. The program serves as an avenue to introduce children with cognitive disabilities to sports preparing them to be a traditional athlete at age eight, as well as play alongside peers in hopes to breakdown barriers by creating awareness and promoting acceptance through an active and engaging setting. At the completion of eight sessions, a Culminating Event is held where all the children can share in the joy of showing off their skills and receiving a ribbon!
The first Young Athletes program in the Fox Valley was held this past winter and was facilitated by a group of young professional from Leadership Fox Cities in Appleton. When they were seeking out a project to take on for a class, they were introduced to the Special Olympics Young Athletes program and knew right away wanted it to be their project. They were successful in reaching out to 22 area youth who met every Monday at Janet Berry Elementary for 8 weeks throughout February and March. At the completion of their session they passed the torch to Appleton Career Academy who ran a Tuesday/Thursday session at Appleton North High School throughout the entire month of May. They continued to build the skills in these young ones and have plans to continue offering the program through the high school next year!
More Young Athletes Programs to be offered soon!
shkosh School District is beginning their partnership with Special Olympics Young Athlete program this summer. A session will be held this summer at Jefferson Elementary on Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:45 – 1:30 p.m. from June 21st – July 21st. In the fall, there are plans underway to start the Young Athletes program in several of Oshkosh School District’s inclusive 4K classes with a goal to eventually reach all of them! Young Athletes is definitely growing momentum and continuously looking to expand. If you, or someone you know, are interested in bringing Young Athletes to your community or school, contact Krysten Kirsch at kkirsch@specialolymipcswisconsin.org. For upcoming events (and contact information for those sites) or pictures of past programs, check out the Young Athletes webpage at http://www.specialolympicswisconsin.org/athlete_young.html.
