Verizon Store in Appleton helps to Spread the Word!
On Wednesday, March 2, 2011, members of the Appleton store teamed up with Special Olympics-Fox Valley Region to raise awareness and money for Special Olympic athletes. The national day known as "Spread the Word to End the Word", was created to help raise awareness nationally in an attempt to stop the use of the "R" word. Verizon Wireless employees wore shirts and bracelets and also put a banner up in the store to support the cause. In the end they raised $435. But money was not the main goal of the day. The amount of people that entered the store and asked about the shirts was unbelievable. Verizon Wireless guests were also offered bracelets to support the cause.

Fox Valley Region Offers Healthy Habits for Athletes
The mission of the Special Olympics Healthy Habits program is to improve each athlete's ability to train and compete in Special Olympics by providing them with resources to advance their health, fitness and overall quality of life. By teaching preventative care practices, Healthy Habits reinforces the importance of developing a healthy lifestyle and integrating healthy choices into an athlete’s daily routine. At the recent Hometown Games, athletes were offered the opportunity to build a healthy snack. Each athlete could select from ingredients such as raisins, craisins, Cheerios, dried fruit, nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, Chex cereals, etc. to make a quick snack that was both nutritious and simple. Special Olympics plans to offer additional Healthy Habits topics such as “Sun Safety” at the Softball and Bocce Tournaments on July 9th. Athletes can also look forward to additional Healthy Habits topics including: Dental Health, Fitness, and Personal Hygiene. In addition Special Olympics will team up with Capital Credit Union employees on August 16th for a one mile Wellness Walk to promote fitness and regular exercise.
